Femme Frequencies is an empowering initiative and collective for female Techno DJs in East Africa, hosting bi-monthly events in Uganda and Kenya, with a focus on underground and techno music.
Femme Frequencies Techno Collective
Femme Frequencies, co-founded by Anitraxx and myself, is a collective that champions female techno DJs and producers in East Africa. We aim to amplify women's voices in the scene, offering a safe and supportive space for creative expression and challenging stereotypes in the industry.
As the designer for Femme Frequencies’ techno collective, I have over the last 5 months created event flyers, promotion videos, and run most of the social media posting for the 4 events that have been held so far.
Femme Frequencies focus on booking female techno DJs located in East Africa, and hosts events in a competitive event market in Kampala. The brand therefore needed to stand out, with a bold, unique style that embodies the “techno-spirit”. I chose a grid design element to go with the brand profile, repeated in various forms and shapes on the flyers and video intros. This grid element is also represented physically at the events as decoration using mosquito nets.
For the Promo Videos, each DJ's introduction is filmed and styled like a classic "fight game" character selection.
For each event, 1 DJ is promoted daily for content and to create anticipation for the event, using aesthetic photographs taken before the event, usually shot by photographer Jordan Beeks or myself.
Additionally, the collective’s Instagram page is carefully planned and curated, to set the tone for Femme Frequencies online. This included image styles and layouts to evoke a cohesive, empowering aesthetic that invites people to connect with our mission.
